Upon creation, the group was simply registered as “Lion Dance Club”. However, drawing inspiration from professional lion dancing organizations and other student-run clubs, it was decided that a new club name was needed to legitimize ourselves as a cultural and performing arts club. Though, for simplicity’s sake, around UC Davis, we are still referred to as Lion Dance Club.
The name Golden Turtle was influenced in part by the Turtle being one of the four traditional power animals of Vietnam (the other three being the Dragon, the Lion, and the Phoenix).
Culturally, gold is a color worn exclusively by the royalty of China. Additionally, there is a saying that “Yellow generates Yin and Yang,” implying that yellow is the center of all colors, or, the universe. It also represents good luck. The Tortoise represents longevity and perfection, traits we would greatly like to embody as a club.
